Anyone whose business has an online presence needs to optimize their site for search. Anyone who has a business should have an online presence, so everyone should be optimizing their site for search. Search results provide an excellent opportunity to advertise to potential buyers.

The information that is currently available about how to build a great website tends to be pretty conflicting. Fortunately, here is a guide to ranking keywords to set you straight. You probably don’t have time to address every single factor on your site, so focus on these most important factors.

Site Speed

It’s no secret that site speed is an important factor in Google’s ranking algorithm; in fact, Google recently received a patent on it. The speed of your pages should play a key role in your site development. Thanks to improvements in coding, you can actually design a site that is both visually appealing and fast to load, which leaves you no excuse for a slow site. If your website loads slowly, it will rank low in search results.

Site Navigation

Your website’s navigation is important to users, and it’s important to search engines. For ease of navigation, you need to develop a proper internal linking structure. This makes it easier for customers to use your site and gives a hierarchy of your site to search engines. A good rule of thumb is that the most important pages should be the fewest clicks away from the home page.

Page Titles

Within your website, each individual page should have a unique purpose, and that purpose should be clearly conveyed by the page title. In addition, each page should have a meta description that gives a brief summary of the page. This will help to improve your click-through rates.

Meta Keywords

Don’t use meta keywords. Not only do they not help your rankings, but they actually hurt you. Bing uses meta keywords to look for spam pages.

Content

Great content is essential for your website’s ranking. Let’s say that one more time: the number one most important factor that will affect your website’s ranking is the presence of great content. Choose one or two keywords to focus on for each page of your website. You don’t need to repeat a lot of variations of that keyword in each page, as was the old practice. However, you should be sure to include the keyword in the page title. It’s also a good idea to include the keyword in a heading and in the URL. Use LSI keywords and provide some context so that Google can understand your content. Don’t spread your pages too thin, either; a thin page won’t rank well. Don’t create a separate page unless there is enough information to justify it.

Alt Text for Images

You probably have a bunch of images on your site, but have you optimized them? If you add alt text to the images on your site, then Google will be able to recognize what those images represent. If you include your keyword on one image on each page, you will boost your search rankings. Don’t keyword stuff your images, though.

Optimization Checklist

Use this checklist to determine how well-optimized your pages are.

  1. Does the site load quickly?
  2. Does the page title contain a keyword?
  3. Does the URL contain a keyword?
  4. Does the page have a meta description?
  5. Do the h1, h2, and h3 headings contain a keyword?
  6. Do your images have alt text?
  7. Does the alt text of at least one image contain a keyword?
  8. Does the page content contain keyword variations?
