Google Penguin Update: Just Seeing the Tip of The Iceberg

Most people have heard about Google’s Penguin update, which caused quite a stir in the SEO community. But while we’ve been running around and trying to fix our websites for the update, it’s important to understand what that update was really all about. It’s one thing to know what changes it caused in the search results, but it’s another thing to know why Google went to all that trouble. When you finally understand the why of it all, you’ll be able to create content that Google loves to rank high.

What Was Penguin?

The Penguin update was all about fixing the algorithm so that SEO spammers were no longer rewarded for their actions. In the past, some grey or even black hat SEO tactics were easily gotten away with if you took steps to hide them well enough. You could still rank high even if people who logged onto your site could tell that you were not following ethical SEO practices.

However, after the Penguin update, spammers were no longer being rewarded. But unfortunately many people who were following Google’s terms of service were also being caught in the Penguin’s net. Many website owners were being penalized simply because they did not understand how the new algorithm works.

Beating Back False SEO Companies

The other problem Google was trying to deal with in the Penguin update is the issue of false SEO companies. They take money from website owners but do very little, if anything, to help their placement in the rankings. And there’s nothing website owners can do to protect themselves from these con men unless they investigate the company before doing business with it.

Of course some might say that the answer is for the SEO industry to offer certifications or verificationsfor SEO companies. The problem with both of these answers is the fact that it’s nearly impossible to certify companies in an industry that changes multiple times per month. Verifications would be difficult to do as well because all reputable SEO companies have their own formula for success. So how would you verify that one company is better than another? It can’t be done.

Educating About What SEO Really Is

The real issue is that clients don’t know what it means to do SEO. There is this big mystery about what SEO is. Just writing content and throwing up keywords in a few places is no longer good enough. Webmasters must be SEO savvy in order to be able to get their sites ranked high.  The more you understand about what SEO is, the easier it is to find a company you can trust with this important part of keeping your website ranked.

It’s also important to realize that the SEO industry changes constantly. No business owner can really handle his own company’s SEO on his own because he’s too busy concentrating on making his business great. Leave it up to the professionals to promote your business. Your business is excellent, and you shouldn’t waste your time trying to tell people how excellent it is.  You focus on being excellent, and your SEO company will handle telling people about it through the search engines.

They’ll cover everything from content writing to coding, back linking, and all of the other complex problems that come up. It’s their job to stay on top of what the SEO industry is doing. If they are a real SEO company, then you’ll be able to see that easily because they’ll be constantly making changes to your website.

Big Content: Why it’s Worth the Risk

Most business owners today understand how important their website is. They write a few articles and just toss them up there and don’t think about it again until the next time they need to post something. But great content development is essential if you want to make the most of your website. If you don’t go big on your blog, then you might as well go home. Here’s what we mean by going big.

It takes a lot of thinking and effort to produce it. It’s also not your standard content. When you go big on your blog, you create content that gets a lot of traffic, even years after you’ve posted it. If you’re blogging successfully, then you’ll see drastic improvements in traffic that are sustained for longer periods of time. So how do you do it? Here are some tips for creating content that sticks around in the search engines.

  • Don’t be afraid to push the envelope. Content that has staying power usually isn’t your standard article. It’s got nice graphics and is designed in a more complex manner that’s not easily forgettable. It becomes a reference guide for people because it’s more than just an article that comes to an end and lies flat on your site. It’s alive and breathing, and people will sense that when they come to your blog.
  • Create a flowchart. Instead of just writing an article about how to do something, why not create a flowchart about it? Many people learn better with images than with words, so by combining the two, you’re creating a piece of content that not only looks sharp, but also conveys the information you want to pass along to your readers.
  • Look at ways to add links to your content. It shouldn’t be a single, stand-alone, dead end page. There should be plenty of avenues away from that page, and most of those avenues can be to other pages on your site. For example, you might consider linking your YouTube videos to the graphics in certain places. Other links might be to other articles on your site, pages about your services, or pop-up graphics that provide just a little bit of information. Once again, you’ve got content that lives and breathes because it’s interactive.
  • Content with staying power doesn’t necessarily need to be expensive, long, or complex. It could even be a single page, but that single page had better be awesome. You will likely find that it takes a full work week just to develop the information on that single page. This page can be a single reference guide to something in your industry. If you’ve done your job, it will be the go-to source for that set of information within your industry.
  • The best content makes your website a hard act to follow. Your competitors shouldn’t easily be able to copy you. It not only builds up your brand, but also sets you apart from competitors because your content is a lot better than theirs, and they probably won’t be able to do much about it.
  • Don’t assume one idea will do the trick. You’ll need variety if you want to create the go-to site or source of all information within your industry. You’ll also need some big ideas to go along with all that variety.

The world of SEO is constantly changing, and it can be tempting to change your content with every algorithm change. But that can be expensive and time-consuming, and is it really necessary? It isn’t if you plan your content wisely. Here are several tips to help you create a great game plan for content creation.

  1. Gain a complete understanding of your brand. It’s important that you develop every part of your brand, from the tone you use to address visitors to your page to your core values and even the affiliations your business holds. Do a basic SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis to uncover parts of your brand. Tools like templates for SWOT analysis or the TAGFEE Core Values tool can help you with this.
  2. Next you should consider your audience. Naturally every audience is different, so it’s important that you tailor your content toward the people you want to read it. Start by determine what your typical ready should be. Use email or social media surveys or focus groups to understand who would read your site and what type of specific content they are looking for. From those studies, create your USPs (unique selling point)—the reasons people should choose your products or services rather than those of your competitors. Once you have those components, you can basically sum up your brand in terms of a famous celebrity. Which celebrity would like your products or services the most?
  3. Then it’s time to come up with some creative ideas that will drive the content on your site. Just start by coming up with as many creative ideas as you can. Just write them down so that you have a list to work from. If you need some help, try one of the online tools designed to help you create thought-leader articles that are more likely to generate traffic. Bottlenose, Spezify, UberSuggest, Keyword Expander, and the Content Ideas Generator from SEOGadget are all incredible tools to help you come up with creative ideas that are also more likely to generate higher search engine rankings for your keywords.
  4. Organize your content into several different types. Most content will entertain, inspire, educate, or convince your audience, and there are many different types of content that do each of these things. For example, articles can do any of these things, although guides and press releases tend to fall in the education category. For a more in-depth explanation, check out this infographic from Smart Insights. You’ll begin to realize that each of your ideas can fall into one of these various content types, which will make planning the order of them much simpler. You can look at the natural progression of topics, moving from simple blog post topics to a related guide or e-book, followed by a case study, all with the ultimate aim of selling your product or service over the long term.
  5. Finally, make sure that when you finalize your content plan, you’ve created the flow you are looking for. Every site should have a content calendar, which should flow naturally like a newscast or concert. Each piece feeds into the next piece in some way, and you’re enjoying a natural progression of peaks and valleys in your content. For example, if you run a fitness website, remember that January and spring are probably going to be two of your busiest times of the year, although for different reasons. January should focus on people who have made New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, while spring should be all about trying to get a beach-ready body. Content should be timely if it’s going to be successful.
