Essentials for Mobile Sites

Posted by Avasoft Team | Posted in Site Traffic, Website Technical Issues | Posted on 17-10-2014

In 2014, 1.75 billion people throughout the world will use smartphones.  If you aren’t using a website that is optimized for mobile, you need to rectify that situation right now.

Shoppers may be able to view your desktop site from their phones, but if that site isn’t optimized for mobile – if it isn’t super-convenient and easy to use – then they won’t stick around long enough to make a purchase.  Your mobile site needs to be dedicated to meeting the needs of mobile users.  Here are some key elements that should be included in your mobile site.

  1. Search box:  Even the biggest new phablets don’t offer the same ease of navigation as a laptop or desktop computer.  Navigating an unfamiliar website from the smaller screen of a smartphone can be tricky.  It’s important that your users can find their way around your website easily, regardless of where they are searching from.  Provide them with a search box so that they can easily find what they are looking for, and you’ll be much more likely to turn visitors into buyers.
  2. Call to action:  Provide a clear call to action in a visible location on your mobile website.  This will help customers find what they are looking for and will help you to increase your conversion rate.
  3. Declutter:  When you are designing a mobile site, think about what customers need most.  Your goal should be to meet the primary needs of your customers.  However, you can’t meet all of their needs.  Focus on the most important things, and stick to highlighting those things on your web page.  Users want an experience that is streamlined and flawless.  A home page that is cluttered will be frustrating to use and drive users away.
  4. Contact information:  One of the drawbacks of online shopping for many users is the lack of human interaction and the related difficulty in building trust or rapport.  You can overcome this by providing clearly visible contact information.  Start by providing the address of your nearest physical store, if applicable.  In any case, you should always provide a phone number for customer service complete with a click to call button.
  5. Filters:  Once again, the smaller screen of a mobile device needs to be addressed.  Users don’t want to page through results for ages.  In order to help users quickly and easily find just what they are looking for, you need to provide them with plenty of filter options to sort their search results.  Offer lots of detailed filters so that the experience is simple and easy to navigate.

These specific tools will help you to optimize your mobile site.  Beyond these tools, there are some important techniques that you should keep in mind.  First of all, be sure to check out your competition.  In order to stay ahead of the curve, you need to know what your competitors are doing.  This applies to the products themselves, and it also applies to how you market those products through your website and mobile site.  Look beyond your industry; you’ll find new ideas that you can translate for your own purposes.

You can get an attractive mobile site by using responsive design, but that isn’t always enough.  Consider the benefits of creating a new, custom mobile site.  This way, you can make every detail meet the needs of your mobile users.  Once that mobile site is established, don’t forget to measure your results.  Use Google Analytics to help you figure out which elements of your site are working and which elements leave some room for improvement.
